Reluctant Housewife: Sweet Potato Mash, the other potato...



Back in the day when I was in college and in my early twenties I basically lived off of sweet potatoes, or yams as some may call them. Because they were cheap and good for you and super yummy I became a huge fan finding new and interesting ways to doctor them up. While most of your are more acquainted with the sweet version of a sweet potato these little potatoes have so much natural sweetness overdoing it on the added sweetness can be a little much.


I started experimenting with savory flavors and created the sweet potato mash!


This mash is so unexpected as a side. Most people will be surprised but excited after they brave a taste!

Sweet Potato Mash


5 large sweet potatoes or yams

2 tbsp olive oil

1 stick of unsalted butter

kosher salt for taste

pepper to taste

fresh sage leaves

4 cloves of garlic minced


Preheat to 400 degrees. Line a sheet pan with tinfoil and place freshly washed sweet potatoes on it. Stick them a few times each with a knife to let out steam. For your and the potato.


Roast your sweet potatoes for 50 minutes. Check by sticking a knife in them see if they're done. If it goes in smoothly and comes out clean they're done. Take them out and let them cool down.


Pour olive oil and butter into a small skillet. Turn on medium-low heat and melt your butter. Add your minced garlic and salt and pepper. Stir until butter becomes foamy. Once butter becomes slightly golden take it off the heat. You've now browned your butter and it'll give your potatoes a nutty, savory flavor. It's delicious.


Peel skin off of your potatoes and place directly into your serving dish. Mash with a masher or a fork until smooth. Add your butter mixture and mix well. Serve immediately or save for later!
